Classic: The Living God

Thursday, April 5, 2012
Reporter: Jeff McMullen
Producer: Julian Cress

August 1996:

It was almost 40 years since the Dalai Lama fled Tibet and the Chinese occupation of his homeland.

Yet still living in exile, he remained a threat to the Chinese, and official propaganda talked of having him eliminated.

The power of the Dalai and his enormous international prestige derived from the fact he answers the threats with simple, serene messages of peace and kindness.

This so disarmed the Chinese, their rule of the Dalai Lama's annexed Himalayan kingdom was still not accepted by much of the world.

On the eve of his visit to Australia, the man who's called a living god, The Ocean of Wisdom and Protector of the Snows, spoke with Jeff McMullen from his exile home in northern India.
