Jennifer Byrne experienced a close encounter of the breathtaking kind.
Surrounded by huge but playful whales, she watched while a noted researcher tried to communicate with them.
Peter Beamish, who worked out of Newfoundland, came as close as any human to deciphering a common language between whales and man.
During the filming, Jennifer and her 60 Minutes crew come within a few metres of the animals, recording the awesome sight of flashing tails and water spouts.
